  • Apart from various folk customs, traditional Czech Christmas is associated with a wide range of culinary specialties. Besides classical Christmas Eve dinner composed of fish soup, fried carp with potato salad and various pastries decorating Czech Christmas tables, Czech cuisine offers a number of sweet and salty delicacies, including mushroom and barley meal called “kuba”. Those who do not know this meal and would like to try it can make use of our recipe. Many people cannot imagine their Christmas without plum sauce, served either with traditional sweet braided bread called “vánočka”, or in a less sweet form with meat, making an excellent match. Its preparation is very easy: basic ingredients are dried plums, lemon, cinnamon, clove and star anise, all boiled in water. After 10 minutes, add nuts and almonds cut in pieces, one table spoon of raisins (or figs) and vanilla sugar. To make the sauce thicker, add grated gingerbread (about two table spoons) and let gently boil for about 20 minutes. Moreover, cold December days can be warmed up with eggnog or Christmas punch, alcoholic beverages associated especially with Christmas period.
